We know the potential imposition of U.S. tariffs — and the possibility of retaliatory Canadian tariffs — is a top concern across the pet industry, with real impacts expected for manufacturers, retailers, and the broader supply chain. Pets Canada is actively engaged on this issue and continues to advocate on your behalf at every level of government.

Representing You at the Table

We want to inform members that Pets Canada was represented on the recent federal industry stakeholder session hosted by the Minister and Deputy Minister of Finance. These sessions are part of the government’s ongoing effort to update industry on trade and tariff developments. We will continue to monitor and participate in these engagements to ensure the pet industry’s priorities remain visible and understood.

Government Response to Our Advocacy

Earlier this month, Pets Canada sent a message to every Member of Parliament outlining the risks these tariffs pose to our members. We received a strong response from the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, MP Vance Badawey, who assured us:

“Your concerns are at the forefront of this government’s attention… I carry your well-articulated concerns with me in my daily efforts to protect businesses like yours and all our fellow Canadians.”

This kind of feedback affirms that our message is being heard at senior levels — but we know this is just the beginning.

What Comes Next

1. Engagement with Bureaucratic Leads: With a federal election expected to be called soon, we are shifting outreach to the relevant trade officials within Foreign Affairs and International Development and Finance Canada, who continue to work on these files.

2. Webinar for Members: We are arranging a session with our GR advisors at Impact Public Affairs to provide members with insight into the evolving trade and election landscape. Details to follow shortly.

3. Election Toolkit: Pets Canada is preparing a grassroots engagement toolkit to support members in raising pet industry issues with candidates during the upcoming federal campaign.

4. Ongoing Monitoring: We will continue to track tariff developments and will provide updates, suggested actions, and intelligence as new information becomes available.
