Dear MNA___,
Pet parents across Québec are struggling, and I am writing to urge you to support two key issues that will help protect pets and ensure their owners can continue to provide care.
First, we must make pet food more affordable by removing the PST from its sale. Pet food is taxed as an indulgence, but it should be considered a good necessary for the health of animals.
As the cost of living increases, PST presents an additional financial barrier to pet parents, leading to the inability to keep what is considered a family member. A rising number of pets are surrendered due to the exorbitant cost of care.
Second, when Québec has a climate emergency, pets are often left behind. The Government of Québec must create an emergency assistance fund that includes provisions for pets and expand the Civil Protection Act and emergency management framework to require all municipalities to include a comprehensive emergency plan for pets.
Natural disasters like floods, wildfires, and major storms are becoming more prevalent with climate change, requiring us to adapt and implement measures to make our communities more resilient. With no legislation in Québec that provides sufficient protection for animals facing these emergencies, first responders are left to deal with unexpected situations, and communities are left to bear the financial and logistical burden of saving their pets in times of crisis. The result is additional complications in already unsafe situations, further highlighting the need for legislation to ensure the safety and efficiency of operations.”
Pets provide essential support to Québecers, and we must ensure we protect them. Pets are a part of the family structure and positively impact daily lives, including improving mental health.
As my Member of the National Assembly, I am asking you to protect pets and their owners by making pet food more affordable and requiring municipalities to include pets in emergency and disaster assistance programs in addition to funding.
Sincerely,
Your Name
