Introduction of New Regulations
Beginning August 1, 2024, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will enforce new regulations for importing dogs into the U.S. Requirements state that all dogs entering the U.S be at least six months old, appear healthy, have an ISO-compatible microchip, and be vaccinated against rabies. Some amendments have already been made to the initial regulations including no longer needing a veterinarian sign-off or CFIA certification. While this is a step in the right direction, work remains to arrive at an equitable solution for all pets and pet businesses. For more details, visit the CDC website and complete the CDC Dog Import Form.
Pets Canada’s Active Efforts
For the past three months, Pets Canada, along with the National Companion Animal Coalition, has been relentlessly advocating for these updates. Through multiple iterations and continuous dialogue with authorities, we’ve successfully streamlined the process for Canadians importing dogs into the U.S. We are still actively working to lower the minimum age requirement for dogs.
