We are happy to announce today, that Pets Canada has linked an agreement with NielsenIQ (NIQ) to conduct regular Canadian surveys focused on pet business and ownership data, making  NIQ Pets Canada’s preferred research partner. NIQ and Pets Canada began working on this partnership in 2021 as a means to explore the companion animal landscape within the country.  This partnership will expand Pets Canada’s ability to provide up-to-date sector data while speaking on behalf of association members.

“In years past, much of what our industry has relied on has been research from the United States.  Having access to our own in-country data will sharpen our ability to understand the profile of Canadian households with pets and lobby the government with increased precision.”, says Christine Carrière, Pets Canada President and  CEO. “We will be able to identify growth opportunities and gaps that may exist so that we can direct efforts to help members and pet families.”

Pets Canada and NIQ completed their first joint survey earlier this year, which explores pet households and the daily life with pets.  A report will be available to members this summer.  As part of the agreement, Nielsen IQ will be providing to members bi-annual data containing topline sales & growth industry numbers at a National level on all pet categories that NIQ tracks and a 25% discount on their first data purchase. ”This data will be extremely helpful for the industry as a whole whether it’s retailers, manufacturers or distributors. There has never been a lot of data available for the pet industry in Canada so this will add a new perspective to actors in the industry and will be helpful to better understand consumer trends and demand” explains Pierre-Marc Denault, Director Strategic Initiatives at NIQ.

“Sector-specific data is an expensive proposition, which can be difficult for companies to afford.  As many of our members are small to medium businesses we needed to find a way to connect them with the information they need to grow and function efficiently. Thanks to this collaboration, access to Canadian data will be much easier.”, explains Craig Brummell, Pets Canada Board Chair.
