Letter to the Federal Government in response to Liberal Party GST holiday announcement
November 22 2024
House of Commons
Ottawa, Ontario
We are writing on behalf of Pets Canada to express our concerns regarding the omission of pet food from the temporary removal of GST from certain essential goods. Pets Canada has consistently advocated that the Federal government remove GST from pet food thorough pre-budget submissions and advocacy days on Parliament Hill.
Canadians across the country have a deep love for their pets and want to ensure they can provide them with the essentials. Pet food is taxed as if it is an indulgence, not a good that is necessary to the health of animals across Canada. As the cost of living continues to increase, the tax presents a financial barrier to pet parents leading to the inability to keep their pets healthy. The consequence is a strain on the over 50% of Canadian households who own one or more pets. Pets Canada urges the federal government to remove the GST on pet food and treat it as the essential good it is.
Owning a pet is no longer considered a luxury but rather a necessity for the mental and physical well-being of many Canadians. Pets are often undervalued for the essential health support they provide to so many. Registered service animals are a critical part of their owners’ care plans and have a substantial benefit to Canadians’ mental health. Removing the GST on pet food products will help Canadians reduce the financial burden on Canadians during a period if rising costs.
Pets are a part of the family structure and positively impact our daily lives. They provide essential support to Canadians, and we must ensure we protect them.
Sincerely,
