On January 23rd, Pets Canada sent a letter to federal MPs expressing the deep concerns of the pet industry regarding the threat and imposition of substantial tariffs by the United States on Canada, as well as potential retaliatory tariffs from Canada. These tariffs could have negatively impacted small businesses and pet families across the country.
As you may be aware, the recent announcement of a 30-day pause on tariffs from both the U.S. and Canada has provided some relief for our members. The imposition of these tariffs would have had a severe impact on the Canadian pet industry. Over the past few days, we have received numerous calls and emails from members sharing their challenges and concerns. In response, we have taken further action, including sending another letter to elected officials and collaborating with our southern pet industry counterparts to develop a joint response to the ongoing trade threats.
Next Steps
- Ongoing Communication: Pets Canada will continue to provide updates in the coming days and weeks, including a potential member webinar and discussion.
- Advocacy Efforts: We remain engaged with elected officials and key stakeholders on both sides of the border at federal and provincial levels.
- Strengthening Trade Opportunities: Pets Canada is actively seeking opportunities to work with federal and provincial governments to reduce interprovincial trade barriers, support the domestic pet industry, and explore stronger trade relationships beyond the U.S. market.
This remains a critical issue with the potential for significant short-term and long-term disruption. Please do not hesitate to contact Christine at Christine.Carriere@petscanada.org or (613) 730 8111 at any time with questions or concerns.
