*Action Needed: Help Us Represent You in Ongoing Tariff Discussions
As part of Pets Canada’s ongoing efforts to represent the industry at the federal level, we recently met directly with officials from the Department of Finance regarding Canada’s response to U.S. tariffs. While no new measures have been announced that directly affect our sector at this time, Finance has advised us that having a clear understanding of the products our members import is critical — particularly if trade tensions escalate.
To ensure your interests are protected, we are asking all members to share a full list of the HS codes for any ingredients, finished goods, packaging, or materials you use or import — including pet food, treats, toys, and accessories.
Please send your list of Harmonized System Codes (HS codes) to tonya.martin@pestcanada.org by Friday April 11.
This information will allow Pets Canada to act quickly and effectively on your behalf if further tariff action is proposed. It ensures your products are considered in any future discussions and helps us make the strongest possible case for the pet sector.
Current Trade Environment – What You Should Know
- March 4, 2025: The Government of Canada imposed 25% tariffs on a broad range of U.S. goods in response to earlier U.S. trade measures. These countermeasures are still in effect.
- April 2, 2025: U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs on most trading partners. Canada and Mexico were exempt, but the situation remains fluid.
- CUSMA Compliance: Goods that meet the rules of origin under the Canada–U.S.–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) continue to be tariff-free. However, not all components used in pet products qualify, especially certain packaging and ingredients.
