Pets Canada is expanding our federal lobby efforts to have sales tax removed from pets food by calling on the Quebec government to eliminate the Provincial Sales Tax (QST) from pet food. Pet food is a basic necessity, not a luxury. Taxing it creates a barrier to proper nutrition and care. This added cost impacts not only pet owners, but also puts pressure on clinics and shelters already operating at capacity. Removing the QST will help improve pet health and, by extension, support public health. Studies show that pet ownership contributes to better mental and physical wellbeing in people. With 51% of Quebec households owning at least one pet and 55% of those caring for more than one, a 9.975% savings on pet food would make a critical difference to these families caring for their animals.
We’re also urging the government to strengthen protections for pets during emergencies. Last year Quebec experienced over 460 forest fires which caused thousands of households to be evacuated. This highlights the need for immediate action. Our proposal includes dedicated funding for evacuation and relocation efforts to ensure pets aren’t left behind when disaster strikes. Supporting these measures will help families stay together, further ensure the safety of emergency responders and build more resilient communities.
As a known trailblazer in Canadian pet legislation, Quebec is well-placed to adopt these ground-breaking changes, once again leading the way in supporting pets and pet families. Your voice matters. Join us in calling on your Member of the National Assembly to support these critical changes. Sign the Pets Canada QST Campaign letter and it will be sent directly to your MNA riding representative. Follow our efforts on social media, share the campaign on your platforms with our Quebec connections and watch for our online ads starting soon.
